Why Parrots Get Mites And How To Prevent Them

Although mite infestations aren't particularly common in well-cared-for Parrots, they can happen. The good news is that, when spotted early, they're usually straightforward to manage with veterinary guidance

These are relatively harmless when treated straight away and there is no need to panic if you spot them.

Signs

Signs your Parrot might have mites are

  • Excessive scratching
  • Increased preening
  • Bald patches
  • Feather damage
  • Red or irritated skin
  • Reduced activity levels
  • Changes in behaviour, including irritability

They might start preening more and become more aggressive as their discomfort increases.

Causes

Mites can spread through contact with infected birds, contaminated environments, or items such as perches, cages and toys. Try and keep your Parrot?s home ventilated to reduce moisture and infestations.

Check your Parrot regularly for any visual signs.

Prevention

Isolate any new birds that enter your home for 30 days before introducing them to another bird.

Regular cage cleaning, changing cage papers, washing food and water bowls and routinely disinfecting perches and toys can help reduce the risk of mite infestations.

Mites have eight legs and two body sections and are dark in colour.

What happens if mites are left untreated?

Left untreated, mites can cause ongoing irritation, feather damage and stress. In severe cases, constant scratching and discomfort may affect your Parrot's overall wellbeing

Treatment

We would always advise speaking with a vet before starting any mite treatments. If you notice signs such as excessive scratching, feather loss, bald patches, skin irritation or changes in behaviour, contact an avian vet for advice and diagnosis. You can find an avian vet using our Find a Vet page.

Once an avian vet has confirmed mites are the cause of your Parrot's symptoms, there are products available that may help as part of a treatment and hygiene programme

The Biogance Anti-Mite Spray can help protect your Parrot from parasites when used as directed.

The Beaphar Insecticidal Spray is effective at controlling red mites.

You should also try to disinfect your Parrot?s entire environment. With treatment, most mites disappear within a week. They won?t disappear on their own.

Most mite infestations can be managed successfully when identified early. Regular health checks, good hygiene and prompt veterinary advice will help keep your Parrot comfortable and healthy
