Thank you to Laura Brown for this delightful story about her African Grey Lyla who stopped feather plucking.

Over to Laura who tells us her story.

Laura

My and my little Grey Lyla went through a tough time together at the beginning of covid. I had to isolate at home which had a massive impact on her, she wasn't used to me being around so much and she didn't nap while I was there.

It really started to affect her to the point she started plucking. She was 7 at the time and this was the first time she'd ever done this. She still played with her toys and interacted with me which made it all the more difficult.

It was so hard for me to watch her hurt herself like this and she caused some awful bleeds (one being under her neck). I then read up a lot about plucking and what can help a Parrot. I bought a feather plucking kit and the plume spray.

Feather pluckers

It became a new routine for her of calcium in her water, vitamins on her food and potent brew once a week and to use the spray once a week. I bought loads of toys designed to help feather pluckers which did keep her busy.

She got to a point she had a lot of bald patches on her chest and belly. It took a few months but it did start to improve with the spray and supplements.

The advice I would give is it is worrying and scary but it does take time and you have to trust the process, be sensitive to your Parrot’s routine, what they are used too and help where you can.

She's now a happy healthy Parrot with all feathers grown back!

Thank you so much to Laura and Lyla for sharing their story.
