Red Rump Parakeet Diet:

Wild Red-rumped Parrots primarily consume:

  • grass seeds
  • herb seeds
  • green vegetation
  • flowers
  • occasional insects, particularly during breeding

In captivity they?ll thrive when provided with a well-balanced diet, containing a high-quality pelleted diet, alongside a variety of fresh vegetables and fruits.

Housing:

  • Require horizontal flight space
  • Benefit from enrichment and foraging opportunities

Sexing:

Females are a dull green with olive underparts.

Males are an emerald-green with yellow underparts with a distinct ?red rump? that gives them their name.

Red Rump Breeding:

The typical clutch size is 4-7 eggs, incubated by the hen for around 20 days.

The male typically guards the nest area and feeds the female during incubation.

Chicks usually fledge at around 4-5 weeks of age and are usually independent 2-3 weeks after fledging.

Temperament

  • Generally gentle
  • Active ground foragers
  • Often less demanding than larger Parrots

Noise Level

  • Quieter than many larger Parrots
  • Pleasant whistling call

Suitable For

  • Intermediate bird keepers
  • Aviary enthusiasts
  • Owners wanting a quieter Parrot species

Suitability as a pet:

They have a relatively easy-going temperament which is one reason for their popularity. They are social birds that generally thrive with companionship, either from another compatible bird or significant daily interaction with their owner. They are energetic and active birds so do require plenty of space to fly, play and explore.

Red Rump Parakeets have a pleasant, song like call. They?re not overly known for talking, some individuals may learn a few sounds or words, but they are not generally regarded as strong talkers.

Availability:

They are becoming increasingly popular because of their relatively calm temperament, attractive colouring and easier-going nature compared with some larger Parrot species.
