The diseases that birds can transmit to people (zoonotic diseases) are rare and simple hygiene prevents most of the diseases that birds and humans share.

Diseases

Parrot fever (Psittacosis) can be transmitted from bird to human through faeces and through infectious particles in the air. The prognosis for birds is uncertain but they can recover. People will recover if treated early enough with antibiotics.

Avian tuberculosis ? rare in pet Parrots but transmission to people can lead to respiratory infections. Usually spread through the air or through the faeces from infected birds.

Histoplasmosis ? a respiratory infection in people who inhale fungal spores from contaminated soil or dust. The Histoplasma fungus grows on bird faeces.

Cryptococcus ? a fungus infection which is uncommon in pet birds. Humans can contract this disease from inhaling dust from dried poop especially pigeon lofts.

Tips for keeping your Parrot`s environment clean and healthy.

Clean food and water pots daily to prevent bad bacteria from entering your bird`s system.

Remove droppings and leftover food from the bottom of the cage daily.

Don`t leave uneaten food around for long periods.

Don`t allow faecal matter to accumulate to the point where mould can grow on it. Change newspaper or paper linings daily if you use them.

Wipe up spills right away or as soon as possible after they occur. Scrub dirty perches with hot soapy water.

Avoid using harsh household cleaners especially for perches, as most can be harmful to birds.

Special bird disinfectants such as F10or Avisafe are great to use on all your bird?s surfaces and to keep germs at bay.
