Meet Kicu the Lovebird

Posted by Kicu The Lovebird, Lovebird, Lovebirds on 26/1/2024

Say hello to Kicu the Lovebird.

Thank you to Jessica Hammage for this month’s Meet My Parrot article, where she tells us all about her Lovebird Kicu.

Why did you choose a Lovebird?

Kicu is a four-year-old Peace-faced Lovebird and she is my very first pet bird.

I chose the Lovebird species as they are small and hence more manageable than larger Parrots. However, despite her little size she has a big personality and loves interacting with us outside of the cage.

What is Kicu’s favourite food?

Kicu is very fussy about what healthy foods she likes to eat, but her favourite is probably sweetcorn or grapes. Like most birds, she loves to eat seeds, specifically sunflower and chia.

Does Kicu have any favourite toys?

Her favourite toys are those that are noisy - such as the Babble Ball, or those that make a mess - shreddable ones.

Does Kicu have any games she likes to play?

Kicu likes to stretch her wings by recalling from various parts of the house and has also learnt to run through kitchen roll tubes and even slinkys.

Does Kicu speak?

Being a Lovebird, she cannot speak. We have been whistling the same tune to her since she was a baby and she flaps her wings in excitement, but is still yet to mimic it. She can however imitate a kissing noise.

Do you have any advice for new Parrot owners?

I advise new Lovebird owners to not expect a bird that is always behaving perfectly. Birds can and will bite, especially as they are maturing or moulting and females can also be very cage territorial. I find the best way to deal with a frustrated bird is to use a perch to take them back to the safety of their cage and give them time to calm down. And when cleaning or rearranging the cage, be sure to move your bird to a carrier first.
