Small Macaw Feeding Guide

Published on Thursday, 14th March 2019
It’s crucial your Small Macaw’s diet is as mixed as possible. 60-80% of their diet should be pelleted or complete food, and the rest of your Macaw’s diet needs to consist of nuts, fruits, vegetables, seed, sprouting seed and other treats.

Macaws can enjoy finding food from their feeding dish or foraging toy.

Complete and Pelleted Food
Are the core part of your Macaw’s diet as they provide them with all the nutrients they need.
Popular choices include Lafeber NutriBerries and Kaytee Exact Rainbow.

Every single NutriBerry contains 40 nutrients, all rolled into berry shaped pieces to make them easy to hold and fun to eat.

There are 5 flavours of NutriBerries

Kaytee Exact
is a mix of shape and colours, yet each piece contains essential nutrition, plus Omega 3 to support heart, brain and eye health.

Sprouting Seed / Soaking Seed
Simply soak them in water, rinsing occasionally, and in a day or two you’ll have a highly nutritious meal for your Macaw to enjoy. Sprouted seeds are packed full of vitamins and minerals.

Seed
Lots of seed varieties are available too.

Parrot Premium Professional has been developed by Witte Molen, avian experts. The recipe
offers an improvement on other seed mixtures and its ingredients include hemp, elderberries and cedar nuts.

Tidymix Seed Diet.is made using over 25 human grade quality ingredients and is 99% edible, reducing feeding costs and waste from shells and husks.

Fruits
Want to support your Macaw’s good overall wellbeing? Then try these foods. Shop from
Tropical fruits
Banana chips
Papayas
Pineapple
Figs
Apples
Cranberries
Mangos

Vegetables
Vegetables, with all their vitamins and minerals, also help to keep your Macaw fit and healthy.
We recommend green and orange vegetables like carrots, kale and broccoli, as they are usually more nutritious.

Nuts
Shelled or unshelled, Parrots just love them.
There are
Cedar nuts
Macadamia nuts
Walnut halves
Mixed nuts
Walnuts in shells
Cashew kernels

Other Treats
Oven Fresh Birdie Munchies come in three flavours, vegetable, cranberry and blueberry and tropical fruit. All have been baked, unlike other Parrot treats.

Krunch-a-Rounds are peanuts coated in rice, adored by Macaws everywhere.

Please Note:
We would always advise buying the smallest bag/pack possible to trial your Parrot with. It can take some time and persistence to introduce a new food. It may be worth having a second bowl of water next to your Macaw’s food bowl, as many enjoy dunking their food before eating it. Always have fresh water available.
