Meet My Parrot: Gizmo The Blue and Gold Macaw
Posted by Macaw, Meet My Parrot on 19/5/2025
Hi, my name is Fern and I rescued Gizmo the Blue and Gold Macaw on the 20th August 2023.
Gizmo is around 16-20 years old and was at a rescue centre for at least 3-4 years.
I volunteered at the rescue for around a year before I was ready to adopt a Macaw. I never thought that Gizmo was available to adopt as his cage said ?reserved? for a while but when I mentioned being interested in adopting a Macaw they asked if I?d like to spend some time with Gizmo as multiple people have reserved him and never came back to bring him home.
I was so happy because he was always one of my favourites at the rescue even though he never moved much or made any noise.
When I brought him out of his aviary to try interacting with him he immediately climbed onto my arm and was sat on my shoulder for a while before climbing over to my partner.
From that moment I knew Gizmo was the one and we brought him home that day. I knew Gizmo would be a lot of work as his feathers were in awful condition and his diet wasn?t the best but I quickly learned that he struggles with self-mutilation as he bites his tail feathers as they grow and makes them bleed.
After countless vet visits, surgery, medications and tests along with dietary changes, lots of training and enrichment and regular showers, Gizmo now has all his tail feathers and rarely bites at them.
I?m so proud of for far he?s come and although he still has bad days, I love him more and more with each day I spend with him.
He?s taught me so much and he is the bird that started my passion for wanting to help Parrots in need and my dream of opening my own Parrot sanctuary or rescue.
