Helping Rescued Parrots in the Ukraine
Posted by Rescue Parrots on 10/7/2025
Here at Northern Parrots, we aim to support as many pet bird and Parrot charities as we can, so when Rebecca Renmant-Oliver who is part of K9 Rescue Ukraine, a registered organisation out of Ukraine contacted us, following the arrival of around 3,000 Parrots and pet birds, we obviously wanted to help.
The conflict in the region has been devastating, and as Ukrainians have and continue to flee their country it has meant leaving their beloved pets behind. This is where K9 Rescue Ukraine has stepped in.
With the beginning of the war, the centre has become a shelter for birds whose owners fled the consequences of hostilities.
The centre has been operating for more than 20 years and before the war it was closely related to the Red Book of bird species: rehabilitation, fattening and reproduction of those birds that are capable of reproduction.
The founder of the centre, Viktor Shelvinsky, is a veterinarian by education, a member of the Western Ukrainian Ornithological Society and collaborates with Ukrainian and foreign specialists. As Viktor is a professional veterinarian, he knows Ukrainian species of birds as well as exotic birds.
As of July 2025, the centre has 72 species, with more than 600 birds. Viktor receives dozens requests from different regions of Ukraine to help birds, also from occupied regions and from soldiers.
Exotic birds (Parrots) in the centre is a result of the war. They have Parrots here because their owners had to leave the country. They also took in a bird after a young couple decided to join the armed forces of Ukraine.
We were keen to help this amazing group and happily put together a bulk donation of assorted foods to be sent over to Lviv.
Rebecca has kindly sent over some lovely photos of rescued Parrots who are living at the centre
The situation near Lviv, where the centre is based, is a more peaceful place for birds to recover and be released back into the wild. The centre does their best to give the Parrots a comfortable condition for life.
In some cases, the charity organises video calls with owners to give both sides the possibility to hear each other because they have a strong emotional connection with them.

We would like to thank Rebecca for facilitating this and the organisation for all their hard work ensuring these Parrots are kept safe and cared for.
Rebecca would also like to thank James, who gives his time to the charity and helps with the delivery of the food.
