The Alexandrine is an extremely handsome bird with plumage of a fine texture. In many respects they are very endearing and can learn to mimic. They might even be described as the `Macaw of the Old World`.
The genus consists of six beautiful and elegant little parakeets, two of which are extremely popular with breeders -- the Splendid (Neophema splendida) and the Turquoisine (N.pulchella). The Elegant (N.elegans) and the Blue-winged (N.chrysostoma) are also well represented in aviculture. The Rock Parakeet (N.petrophila) is kept by a small number of Australian breeders.
