Kakariki eating seed

Ensure your Kakariki’s diet is as varied as possible. Try offering at least 60% of their diet as pellets or complete food, and the remainder made up from dry and sprouted seeds, fruits, green vegetables, seeding grasses and other treats.

Hide food inside foraging toys for your Kakariki to find, or alternatively fill up their feeding dish.

Soaking Seed / Sprouting Seed

Soak these seeds for a couple of days, rinsing occasionally, then pretty soon you’ll have scrumptious sprouting seed with lots of vitamins and minerals your Kakariki needs.

Vegetables

Fruits

Fresh fruits including grapes, strawberries and apples go down a treat. For convenience you’ll find a range of dried fruits available which offer just as much nutrition.

  • Mango
  • Apple
  • Cranberry

Other Treats

Reward your Kakariki in a variety of other ways with these other treats, some popular suggestions include…

Vitapol have a range of treat sticks for smaller birds, available in Fruit, Strawberry, Orange and Kiwi flavours.

Top Tip:
It is a natural foraging behaviour of Kakariki to feed from the ground, so you may find they scratch rapidly with their feet, scattering the food from their bowls. To help reduce the mess some owners place dished inside much larger containers. You may also want to consider products like the Seed Corral or Parrot Food Mate.

Please Note:
We would always advise buying the smallest bag/pack possible to trial your Kakariki with. It can take some time and persistence to introduce a new food. It may be worth having a second bowl of water next to your Kakariki’s food bowl, as many enjoy dunking their food before eating it. Always have fresh water available.
