My tiels used to love these and would smash through them, then they discovered Harrisons lifetime fine. In common with another reviewer I still give them this as well for a bit of variety. There is no competition though. I give them the same amount of each. I have to refill the Harrisons fine every day. I refill the Kaytee exact once a week. Ive never had any problems with them being to hard or big for my tiels. Their nips hurt lot more than my grey though - maybe mine have been sneaking steroids behind my back or something!

Great Food For Medium Size Birds

My Parrots: Quaker
Location: United Kingdom
I actually bought this food for my Quaker Parakeet on recommendation from the vet. Some of the review have said the pieces are too large and tough for their tiels, but a quaker beak seems to have no trouble grinding up these pellets. Byron adores them. It was the only thing that converted him from seeds, which he was fed at the store, to pellets. The percentages of vitamins and minerals also suit quaker-size birds, such as sun conures, senegals, meyers , green cheek conures and dusky conures, as long as they have regular supplements of fresh fruit and veg. The only reason I have given this product 4 stars instead of 5 is because I think it would benefit from being advertised as a product suitable for quakers and similar sized birds.

Too Big For Fully Grown Cockatiels

The colourful flower shapes are bright and attractive, however are far too big for my tiel to eat! Have had to break them up so he can eat them. I have addressed the size issue to kaytee, have had no response.
I don't recommend this product

Too big, too hard and messy

I had no trouble getting my tiels to try these - they must look and taste appetising, but I think these pellets are just too hard and some of them too large for my cockatiels. The long green ones in particular NEVER get munched, and they remove them from the bowl. When the birds are crunching the rest up, they fling all over the place as they are very tough. If they were smaller I don't think it would be a problem, but large pieces just end up getting wasted all over the cage floor and the floor outside of the cage.By comparison, Harrison's pellets are small and soft. Perhaps the hardness of the Kaytee pellets is good for their beaks and provides better stimulation? But if you're worried about mess and wastage, these possibly aren't the best choice.

Pellets far too big and solid for our tiel

We used this as a mixture to liven up the Harrison's pellets we usually give our tiel. He loved the taste and licked them like mad but just couldn't bite them. When he finally did it exploded in his face. We tried soaking them in fruit juice as suggested on the pack but this just seemed to make them slippery and they pinged acros the room and fell out the cage. If they came in budgie size it would have been better as I think our cockatiel may have been able to manage these!

The product is very good, my birds are thinking twice about it though, they have been on seeds to long. But i keep it there and hope they are going to dig in rather than bat it out lol.

Good!

My cockatiel ("Punk") is a HUGE selective feeder, and this food allows for that - different shapes and colours, all equal nutrition. This is a good main food; however i do mix in other things (mostly to stop her getting bored, to give variety, and to help digestion and general health)...I find the best mixture for my bird is: fill the feed dish with "Kaytee", then add about 1-third of a teaspoon of seed-mix, 1 pinch of calcium powder, and a small sprinkle of charcoal.PLEASE NOTE: If your bird is like mine and is scared of EVERYTHING new, don't worry and give up on this food straight away. In my case, it took about 3 days before my bird would try it - once she was hungry enough, she ate it... And now she LOVES the stuff!
